In issue#16 of Kids Nation magazine, we highlight several young influencers, who rise above the ordinary. Ben Troupe is one of them.
Ben Troupe is a former professional NFL player for the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is now a motivational speaker, sports radio analyst/commentator and an NFL Ambassador.
Even after he left the field, Troupe continues on changing lives, as he motivates students to reach their goals through his talk. He also contributes in various capacities all over the country, such as his involvement with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Read to America organization.
“I’ve always felt like my life was a culmination of so many people that helped me, so I think that my success belongs to everyone except myself,” Troupe concluded. “To be able to give something back to the next generation, give hope to the hopeless, inspire those who have been uninspired, encourage those who have been discouraged, is the greatest thing I’m doing. I’m shining light in a dark place and, if nothing else, letting these kids know that if God can do it for me, He can do it for you.”1
What an inspiration!

Kids Nation (KN): Who has been your most influential role model? Why?
Ben Troupe (BT): My mom has been the greatest influential role model in my life. As a polite, honest and hardworking woman, she taught me the values of leading by example, respect, responsibility, and integrity. She has always been a source of strength. As a Christian woman she prides herself on living a life with integrity, truth, and love. Even though she is not perfect, her positive attitude, compassion, and unwillingness to give up or give in have been the very thing that help make me the man I am today.
KN: What was the biggest challenge in your life and how did you overcome it?
BT: The biggest challenge in my life was overcoming the fear of failing and thinking that no matter what I tried to achieve it wouldn’t happen because I felt that I was destined to fail. I overcame my fear by changing my mindset and being willing to get out of my comfort zone. I realized that failing was just a part of success, and just like night and day you can’t have one without the other. So now I use failure as a tool. As I use it as a tool, it means that it has afforded me tremendous opportunity and many successes in my lifetime. I believe that the best is yet to come.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” — Winston Churchill
KN: What was one of your proudest moments?
BT: In 2012 I had the privilege to show my respect to the military and acknowledge the sacrifices they’ve made for all by participating in a celebrity basketball game honoring both the Cpl. John Stalvey Foundation and the Wounded Warriors. Cpl. John Stalvey, a 22-year-old Marine serving our country, was killed in 2005 while in Afghanistan. That day was overwhelming, but at the same time it was one of the proudest moments.
KN: What words do you live by?
BT: “To whom much is given, much will be required.”(Luke 12:48). Always remain humble, keep God first. Lead by example. Don’t compromise yourself. Speak truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. Don’t compromise yourself. Speak truth, even though it might create conflict or tension.
